Breath of Life

"In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and empty; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the waters" (Genesis 1:1-2). Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit are one. At the same time, they are three distinct beings. Still, Scripture lets us see how Jesus was present at the very beginning of all creation. As John states, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him (Jesus); and without Him, was not anything made that was made...And the Word was made into flesh and dwelt among us" (John 1:1-3, 14). This passage is talking about Jesus Christ. Therefore, John says that Jesus was present at the beginning of the creation of the world. Furthermore, Jesus created everything that was made.
Scripture says that God did not create the earth in vain. To put it differently, God did not create the earth without a purpose, without reason, or to be empty. Scripture tells us that God "formed the earth to be inhabited" (Isaiah 45:18). That is, the earth had a specific purpose—to be a place where beings lived.
Likewise, God created humans from the dust of the earth. And like the earth at the beginning, humans were void (empty). Which is to say, humans had no life in them. But did God create humans in vain, without a purpose, or for no reason? No, he created humans to be inhabited, but inhabited by what...or whom?
God created humans from the dust of the ground and breathed into the nostrils of humans with the breath of life, and humans became living souls (Genesis 2:7). This means that humans were void of any signs of life until God breathed into them (inhabited them). This shows that God did not intend for humans to be empty vessels or carcases. He created humans to embody the very breath and life of God within them. Just think about it. The very breath we are breathing right now is a continuation of the very breath of God. And since Jesus is God, we also have the breath and life of Jesus within us today. In the next post, I will go more into detail about the similarities between this breath of life and the Holy Spirit.
