True Breath of Life
September 25, 2025
Jesus breathed on his disciples and said, "Receive the Holy Ghost" (John 20:22). This passage gives us a very important symbol and relationship to the spiritual world. Here, we have Jesus breathing on his disciples similarly to how God (Jesus) breathed into the nostrils of humans at the beginning of time. We can take one analogy from this. Just as God breathed into the physical bodies of humans, Jesus (God) breathes into the spiritual bodies of humans. Likewise, just as God did not create humans in vain (He did not intend for them to be empty and without purpose), He does not intend for humans to be spiritually empty and without spiritual purpose.
God breathes into our spiritual bodies the true breath of life, who is Jesus—"the Way, Truth, and Life" (John 14:6). However, unlike the first breath of physical life, the breath of spiritual life results from a personal choice. This choice is to accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. In other words, we must agree that Jesus is the Son of God, He died and rose from the dead for the forgiveness of our sins, and is ruler over every aspect of our lives. This choice welcomes the Holy Spirit (the true breath of life) into our lives so that we can truly live. The Holy Spirit is the true breath of life that allows us to breathe spiritually. Which is to say, we can have an eternal breath. We know that people stop breathing when they die. However, with the Holy Spirit—whom is our eternal breath—we can breathe forever and live forever through the mighty power of God.
